Benjamin Kwakye was born in Accra and attended the Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School. He has a BA degree from Dartmouth College and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.
 
Benjamin Kwakye's first novel, The Clothes of Nakedness, won the 1999 Regional Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book and has been adapted for radio as a BBC Play of the Week. His second novel, The Sun by Night, won the 2006 Regional Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book. His third novel, The Other Crucifix, was the winner of the 2011 Independent Publishers' Gold Award for Adult Multicultural Fiction and received a nomination for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.
 
He is also the author of a collection of three novellas:Eyes of the Slain Woman. A fourth novel, Legacy of Phantoms, is in the process of publication. Kwakye has been described as one of the most important Ghanaian novelists since Ayi-Kwei Armah.
 
Benjamin Kwakye currently works as legal counsel in the Chicago area. He has served as Resident Novelist of Window to Africa Radio and is a director of The Africa Education Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting science education in Africa.
