The first film shown in Nigeria was in 1903 at Glover Hall, Lagos, while the first film shot in Nigeria was in Jos, Plateau State, in 1904. The film was titled Palaver. Thereafter, the Colonial Film Unit came into existence and popularized film-showing through mobile cinema vans. The cinema-going culture was sustained with British and American exploits.

As a developmental agency, our activities and programmes have been such that challenge the organization. Consequently, our mandate, functions, mission, vision and services are herein listed.

Mandate

The instrument establishing the Corporation mandates it to:

* Plan,
* Promote,
* Organize, and
* Co-ordinate Development


of the Nigerian motion picture industry in accordance with the socio-economic policies and objectives laid down by the Federal Government of from time to time.

Functions

Its mains functions are:

-the production of films for domestic consumption and export;

- the establishment of maintenance of facilities for film production

-the encouragement of the production of Nigerian films;

-through financial and other forms of assistance;

-the encouragement of the development of cinematograph;

-theatres by Nigerians by way of financial and other forms of assistance;

-the acquisition and distribution of films; &

-the establishment and maintenance of national film archives.

* Creating an enabling environment for the sustainable development of the Motion Picture Industry in Nigeria.


VISION

* A viable motion Picture Industry that projects Nigeria's Values and Heritage.
