The earliest travellers' tales described the inhabitants of the Bijagos archipelago in Guinea Bissau as untamed warriors, excelling both as foot soldiers and drinkers of palm wine. They have kept this reputation up until the present. Protected by their own insular fastnesses, they demonstrate great originality in the ways they apprehend the world as reflected in their social structures. The film concentrates largely on the initiation of the Bijago males, which takes place between the ages of 20 and 30.
