Niger is the first country in Africa (excepted Egypt) to have an industry of cinema. Mustapha Alassan and Oumarou Ganda were the frist directors. Al' Lèèssi (which means "a destiny" in Songhoy) tells about this pionneers of African cinema - through the career of the first woman to act, Zalika Souley - in the sixties.

Zalika Souley is ongeveer 50 jaar oud en woont in de voorstad van Niamey, de hoofdstad van Niger. Ze zorgt voor haar vier kinderen in een kleine twee kamers huis, er is geen stromend water of elektriciteit. Dertig jaar geleden was Zalika een ster van het witte doek - de eerste echt professionele Afrikaanse actrice, heroïne in het Retour d'un Aventurier.
